English version below, as you may know (It's not about falling in love, is about to keep the love. Seven tips)

No idealices.

Muchos duros. Admirable. Me quito el sombrero que no tengo.

5. Sean socios.
Clave. Toda pareja debe tener objetivos comunes.

Chaaauuuu.

***************************
It's not about falling in love, is about to keep the love. Seven tips.

Having a long-term relationship is not easy and I doubt anyone will contradict me. Although right now I don't have a relationship, I consider I'm a man of long-term relationships. I've been thinking on this matter for a little while and now I have the time to write, it coincides with that recently I met with a friend who unfortunately is ending her marriage. I say unfortunately because it didn't work. It's always sad when something you believe was forever, when something you work for so hard was not as good as you expected. This note is for her, but also for any reader who feels identified. Oh, and I also want to remind Benedetti, that master of romance. May the gods of poetry have him as well served as he deserves.

These are my seven points to maintain a lasting relationship.

1. Adore her/his defects. Understand him/her.
One of the most important points. We must start from the premise that nobody is perfect. Each person with whom you share spaces have something that you may seem "bad", and by that I mean within the office, friends, class mates, family, etc.. etc. I think if a relationship ends because of this is because you "idealized" your couple and this is bad. Don't. I struggled a lot with my brother, but i always loved him, hated a few things of him, but I never stopped feeling that love of brothers. Well, with your partner must be the same. Don't you ever happened you feel that this person can do whatever and you still love him/her forever? Well, it has happened to me and is real. Right now I feel so much love for her, even though it was long ago and now we are good friends and when we speak is as if we had seen two days ago. OK: brotherly love, the love you feel for a very close family. Going back to the principle that we all have flaws, you must understand or even more, to love your couple's flaws. If she's that kind of women who leave the underwear in the shower ... enjoy, understand. If he's that kind of men who leave the toilet lid up, then put it down, understand and smile. If you hate squeezing the toothpaste right in the half and he/she does it, take it well and tell him you don't like it, or enjoy. It's not that bad. OK, it's not about to accept everything and losing your identity, just love your partner as a whole, with the good and the not-so-good.

2. Maintain your space.
As I said in the previous point, don't lose your identity. When you start a relationship you want to spend all the time with your couple. If it were up to you, you would sleep, eat, even go to the bathroom with him/her. Nice, but when living together and/or married you will realize that you don't have your own space. Or if it's a dating and it ends, you'll notice you don't have any friend, you lost them, your whole life was turning around your partner and, again, this is bad. That's why you should keep your space. If you're married, try to go out alone with your friends once in a while. You should
mantain your friends, your job, your space, your hobbies. You're a couple, that means TWO. A complement, don't become one. If you are married, is also good to go out occasionally, but not often, I believe. And very important: in your house you must have space just for you. That room where you can listen to your music, or playing music, painting your pictures, write or read your novel. Watch your programs. Note: I'm not saying you should live apart and only see each other at night to give your good-night kiss. NOOO! It's simply a place to remember who you are and where to take some distance if you need it. It's not a prohibited area for the other person, is simply a place to do your stuff. You need to be very innocent to believe that you'll do everything with your couple or that you'll never want to be alone. Oh, and don't forget to respect the space of your couple. This is not just about you, ok? He/she needs the same as you and may also needs to be alone every little time. Respect that to respect yours.

3. Don't forget why you fell in love with him/her.
In long-term relationships people tend to have the relationship for granted. Every day you must do something to make your couple love you. Dress attractive occasionally, bring her a gift just because, write him a romantic post-it where he can found it. Don't call just to ask her how are the children or if he did that you asked for two days ago. Call and say "Hi, I love you" and that's it. And if the day comes when you think "Dammit! I hate him!!" remember why you loved him/her. That day will come for sure. And for sure there's something that you love, how she looked when you first met, how it was when you went out together, the contagious-laughter she always had, that smart-way he always did everything, how well she used to dress... one of many things that catch your eye on the beginning.

4. Be boy/girl friends.
This applies especially to those who are married or have a long history together. After a while is often forgotten that both enjoyed doing everything together. As I said in the previous note, you should play, have fun, have good time. Be like children. Give her that flower you cutted on the way, or buy it. The better details are the simplest. You don't need to send her a flower arrangement, buy only to buy a chocolate she loves. Go out you two alone to do what you did at first, go to the movies, to dance, to dinner. Call him and play that song that makes you dedicate him a long time ago (or a new one, there's always good music). Look at the moon together, run barefoot ... whatever!! Anything that you did enjoy at first. Don't miss the romance, don't fall into the daily routine. Something that taught me a girlfriend: Always say hi and then give him/her a big hug, as if you hadn't seen each other in two months. Give her a bear hug with a tight kiss. As
saying "fuck! What a joy to have you! ".

5. Be partners.
Every couple should have common goals. If you see you in five years living in Los Angeles while your partner see him/her in Somalia ... something happens. If you want to buy an apartment in the downtown and she wants a little house in the beach... bad. If you want to have five children and your couple wants one cat... bad thing. So far it's good to talk and agree in common goals, no matter if they are short, medium or long term. Even better, do it for the three. And obviously it's not enough to agree on objectives but to want them. Let's not talk about objectives, but goals. Furthermore there's nothing more satisfying to accomplish goals, look back and realize the path. "OK, in a year we will buy that car.... Hmmm, we will live buy that house in three years".

6. Be friends.
How do you expect to have a relationship with a person who is not your friend? Tell each other all that office gossip. Take a coffee. Give you a little time to catch you up. It's common that you come home so late and tired from work and you don't want to see anyone. Well ... maybe not that day but in the weekend, talk!! You must maintain the friendship that brought you together in the beginning as high and stronger as possible. Very important.

7. Be lovers.
Couple relationship without sex has no future. There's so much spoken about it so I will not expand too much, but you must be creative, to invent new things, play games, keep the passion alive. A good prelude begins with good music, wine, fireplace ... or a romantic date, good restaurant. In sex-time be creative with food (ice cream, ice, wine, chocolate, mints ... ). Role Playing Games: costumes, handcuffs, leather... Create the atmosphere: soft textures, a very soft blanket ... a well-padded rug. Smell: very soft. Do prefer sweet scents like sandalwood, honey, some soft fruit. The jacuzzis help a lot.
A good massage ... and I better stop because I will get excited.

These lists are always short. Surely you found something that I missed (in addition there were seven tips, I would have to change the title). Having said that, I can only tell you to go and enjoy. Remember how nice is to have your couple with you and enjoy every moment. In the mean time I'll go to see Two and a half men, that this chapter is new. Byyyyyeeeee.

  5. Awesome note, as always, Omar. :-) It's a damn good thing you stopped that last point when you did, though... Ohhhh boyyyy.... :-P All good points. Why do I sense that you'll have no problem making a marriage last? :-)

There's something else I'd add: openness and honesty. I'm not just talking about not lying to your partner, but about being open and honest about your wants/needs/desires. If your partner doesn't know something they do makes you feel bad, they're just going to keep doing it. If he/she doesn't KNOW you see yourself living in Somalia in 5 years, he/she will just go ahead with his/her plans to end up in Los Angeles. So being open and honest is more than just being truthful in answering questions; it's about letting your partner know what you think and how you feel....

Anyway, just my two cents... :-)

    Buen post.
